NBN Co says fibre uptake will accelerate in next few months as RSPs roll out required IT

Uptake of fibre lead-ins under NBN Co’s Fibre Connect program is expected to accel- erate in the next few months as RSPs complete the necessary back office IT work to connect seamlessly and easily upgrade a customer.

“It has taken some of the industry a while to be able to make those IT changes.” NBN Co Sephen Rue said. “In the next few months, all of the main players will have done that work and therefore we will see an easier sell for the retailers and more acceleration in the marketplace for the high speed tiers.”

According to Rue, the deployment of the local fibre network has been finished in several locations all over Australia, meaning that approximately 550,000 premises serviced by FTTN can be upgraded to FTTP by December 31, 2022. Rue also stated that the telco's plan to allow up to 1.5 million houses and businesses serviced by FTTC to update to FTTP is moving forward successfully.

By 31 December 2022, around 810,000 FTTC premises became eligible to upgrade to FTTP.

NBN Co closed the half-year with more than 8.5 million premises connected to the network. 77% of customers were connected to plans based on speed tiers offering wholesale download speeds of 50Mbps and above and 21% of customers were connected to plans based on speed tiers offering wholesale download speeds of 100Mbps and above, compared to 15% a year ago.

By the end of 2025, NBN Co plans to enable access to the NBN Home Ultrafast wholesale speed tier for up to ten million premises on the fixed line network, which can achieve peak wholesale download speeds of 500Mbps to almost 1Gbps. This represents approximately 90% of the property on the network, and NBN Co has stated that it is on the right path to meeting this goal.
