Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Community Fibre and NBN?
Community Fibre primarily serves multi-dwelling units (MDUs) that were previously connected via NBN FTTB and operates its own independent network, using G.Fast and FTTP technologies to deliver faster and more stable broadband services for apartments and buildings.
The main difference between Community Fibre and NBN lies in the connection technology. Community Fibre uses G.Fast in most of its projects, while NBNCo adopts a mix of FTTB, FTTC, and FTTP technologies.
In most covered locations, customers who choose Community Fibre can upgrade from NBN FTTB to Community Fibre’s G.Fast or FTTP network at no additional infrastructure cost, resulting in significantly improved network speed and stability.
What is the difference between G.Fast and VDSL?
VDSL is an older broadband technology that uses copper telephone lines.
G.Fast is a newer, faster technology that uses short copper lines where fibre is already close to the premises.
Compared to traditional FTTB VDSL technology, G.Fast delivers 10–20 times higher throughput and up to 8 times improved stability, significantly enhancing overall network performance.
How long does it take to activate Community Fibre Network?
Activation time depends on whether an on-site visit is required.
No on-site visit: usually activated within 24 hours after order submission.
On-site visit required: a technician will contact you within 1–2 business days to arrange installation.
What speed plans are available on the Community Fibre network?
Occom offers a wide range of Community Fibre plans to suit different usage needs, including 25Mbps, 50Mbps, 100Mbps, 500Mbps, 1000Mbps, and up to 2000Mbps.
Whether for everyday browsing, working from home, HD streaming, or online gaming, there is a plan to match your needs. As one of Australia’s top-rated Community Fibre providers on Google Reviews, we also offer professional plan recommendations.
Which areas are covered by the Community Fibre network? Is my address eligible?
Community Fibre currently serves urban areas in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, with coverage continuously expanding to more locations as the network grows.
You can check your address on our website or contact our team to confirm service availability and recommend the most suitable plan based on your needs.
What type of router do I need?
You will need a router that supports EWAN (Ethernet WAN) to connect to our network service via an Ethernet cable.
If you don’t have one, Occom offers suitable routers for purchase, with discounts or free router offers available on selected plans.
Are there any New Development Charges or Activation Fees?
Occom currently does not charge New Development Charges for Community Fibre addresses.
Community Fibre services are no-contract and activation-fee free, subject to service availability and terms.
Can I use my existing phone service with Community Fibre?
Yes. You can continue using your existing landline number by porting it to Occom and accessing VoIP phone services over the Community Fibre network.
Once the number transfer is completed, our team will assist you with the setup to ensure your phone service works smoothly.
