Mid-2020 set for NBN rollout completion
The company behind the national broadband network says it is on track to complete it by June 30 next year, within the $51 billion budget.
NBN Co said in its 2020-23 corporate plan released on Friday that 11.5 million households and businesses would be in a position to order the service by the end of the 2019/20 financial year.
There were 5.5 million homes and businesses connected to the NBN as of June 2019.
The plan also updated the company’s future revenue growth forecasts.
“NBN Co’s strong financial performance over the 2018/19 financial year has translated into a revenue target of $3.7 billion in 2019/20, with revenue growth forecast to reach $5.9 billion in 2022/23,” Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said.
NBN Co will late next year turn its focus from building the network to being a full-scale service delivery organisation.
Chief Executive Stephen Rue said after 10 years of hard work and less than 10 months out from the target completion date he was confident it would be built on time and on budget.
“To date, NBN Co and its delivery partners have rolled out more than 280,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cable, re-purposed and upgraded existing HFC and copper technologies, built a fixed wireless network comprising some 2200 towers and approximately 13,000 cells, and launched two satellites,” he said.
“Now is the time to focus on how Australians in homes and businesses across the nation can get the most out of the network.”
Labor communications spokeswoman Michelle Rowland said the plan highlighted the challenges facing the economics of the NBN.
“Build and operating costs out to mid-2022 are $1.3 billion higher than previously forecast, and cash flows have been delayed,” she told AAP.
“NBN is clearly struggling with the complexity of multiple technology rollouts.”
